Inside iPod Touch
At first glance, Apple's iPod Touch looks almost exactly like its sibling the iPhone. It sports the same distinctive touch screen, plays movies and music in much the same way, and can also use wireless Internet connections for surfing the Web. All it really lacks is the ability to call another person.
But according to a teardown analysis conducted by market-research firm iSuppli, the Touch isn't just a stripped-down iPhone, but rather it has some unique design traits of its own. ISuppli pegs Apple's (AAPL) total cost of components on the 8GB version of the Touch at $147, or about 49% of the $299 retail price on the device. This would follow the pattern of other devices in Apple's iPod family that generally carry material costs that amount to about half, give or take a few percentage points, of the retail price.

The HTC Touch Dual Unboxing
"The HTC Touch Dual is another one of those devices that everyone seems to be talking about at the moment. Thanks to our friends over at Clove Technology we've managed to get our hands on one to review. As with all of our reviews, where possible, we'll be using the device for a few weeks and only then will we prepare the review.
Comparing real books to Kindle by Scobleizer
Last night I met Cathy Brooks. She’s helping plan the LeWeb3 conference. I trust her opinion and she’s whip smart.
I showed her the Amazon Kindle device and asked her which book should be my first book I read on it. She recommended “Basic Black” by Cathie Black. She has been on the executive teams for a lot of publishing efforts from USA Today to Oprah’s new, and highly successful, “O” magazine.
I did something that I’ve never been able to do before. I bought the book right in front of her.
When I got home I started reading — I got about halfway through the book. I can see why Cathy recommended this book. Lots of great lessons about business and stories about the publishing industry, something I’m interested in.
Anyway, this morning I did a little video comparison to “real” books. I compared it to Blue Planet Run, a photo book that Rick Smolan just sent me (he’s a famous photographer who we’ll have on Photowalking someday if we can match our schedules up).
Hopefully this will be the last of my Kindle posts. Onto other things.

The Amazon Kindle - Wireless Reading Device
Introducing Kindle™ Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle. We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, you’ll find reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot, and is designed for ambidextrous use so both “lefties” and “righties” can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time. We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read. With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven’t read the book for tomorrow night’s book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you’re in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand. We’re very proud to introduce Kindle and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
My first impression of the Kindle is that it has lots of potential to be a great tool for educators and students. Although the first generation Kindle is promising I thought many will jump the gun to buy one given the price tag. I'm sure Amazon was aware this device would not have mass appeal given the buzz around the iPhone and iPod Touch. Mostly likely buyers are over 30 techies who are found of reading and like the wireless (EVDO) portability of the device.
The Zune 2 Review - The Out of the Box Experience by Zune Thoughts
The "OOBE" (Out Of Box Experience) is about the packaging and the presentation. Does the OOBE make you feel like you purchased something valuable and well-thought out? Or does it make you feel like you bought something cheap and of low value? When we see something in a plastic blister pack, we know it's not very expensive – when we see something in a richly coloured, finely detailed box, we have a different feeling about its value. I'll explore the Zune OOBE in a series of photographs, and as I unpack the box I'll take record my impressions about each step. And yes, I really did absorb the Zune this slowly - I didn't just rip open the box and start playing with it right away.
The Zune packaging is quite unique – I don't think I've ever seen any electronic device packaged quite like this before, especially not with the colours chosen. It almost looks more like a box for perfume than a digital media player. The package was much smaller than I thought it would be. There are many fascinating psychological studies about the intersection between perceived value and package size, but I think the Zune strikes a good balance. When I saw the small size of the box my perception of the value actually went up, because I was impressed with it being so small. The box has rich, deep colours, and the texture is smooth. It exudes quality.

iRiver Clix 2 - Portable Media Player Review
WiFi, Bluetooth, touch screens, DVR capabilities...these are great features cropping up in recent media players, but what if you just want a reliable, easy-to-use portable player for music and video?
The iRiver Clix 2 has one of the best form factors on the market--it's small, light, quite durable, easy to navigate with its intuitive "D-click" pad, and delivers great sound and video. It packs 8 GB of storage into its tiny frame, so there's plenty of room for your MP3s, photos, and movie clips. The extra features such as Flash games, FM and voice recording, and a text reader are icing on the cake and make the Clix 2, for its price, currently one of the best values out there in portable media players.

T-Mobile Germany Debut the Apple iPhone
T-Mobile began selling Apple's iPhones shortly after midnight. The iPhone in Germany is sold with a USB cable, power pack, docking station, and Apple sticker, and cloth to clean the screen. And a tool to remove the SIM card which is not available in the US.
Unlike the US devices, German iPhones have a field where various keyboard layouts can be set. Users can select from German, English (UK & US), French, and Italian. In addition, the double-click function of the Home key can be assigned either to the main screen, telephone favorites, or the iPod display.

T-Mobile Announced the T-Mobile Shadow will debut Oct 31.
According to Engadget, T-Mobile announced today that the T-Mobile Shadow, a Windows Mobile smartphone will be available to purchase for $149.99 with a 2 year contract on October 31, 2007. The sleek new phone will come with WIFI, a 2 megapixel camera, a new version of T-mobile's myFaves and all the bells and whistles of Windows Mobile standard edition (Windows Media player, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more...).
Archos 605 WIFI Portable Media Player Review
Perhaps you can't afford an iPod Touch, or you like Apple products just fine but want to see what else is out there in the portable media player market. One device that should definitely catch your attention is the Archos 605 WiFi Portable Media Player. Besides the standard music and video (on the biggest LCD touchscreen currently available), the 605 has optional plugins that add a fully Flash-capable Opera web browser, the ability to schedule and record shows like a TiVo, and the ability to stream media from your PC directly to your TV with DVD-quality resolution and 5.1-channel surround sound.
If you can deal with a slightly clunky interface, buying the plugins separately, and the need to spend some time getting to know the device before you can get the most out of it, you'll be rewarded with an affordable player that can simply do more than any other device currently on the market.

What's Cool About The Zune!
With a FM Tuner, 80 gigabytes of storage space, and the ability the share music, pictures and I assume videos with other Zune users makes the Zune 2 a great holiday gift for $249 US.
This ain't the Kool-Aid talking
I needed something to amuse me. I'm on my way to a funeral and anything to keep my mind off the tragedy and sadness will be welcome. I pull out my Zune and flip through some of my music looking to make a quick list. Just out of curiosity I click on the Community menu to see if I'm the only one in the world that has bought a Zune. I get the circular moving dots that tell me that its searching for other Zune devices and lo and behold "Chito" shows up. Wow--I'm amazed. Someone else in the Seattle airport has a Zune and they're nearby. I look around to see if I see anyone listening to music. I see a young man sitting a few seats down from me listening to his music. I thought to myself, "Let's see if this thing works." I browse through my gallery and find some cool (for me) backgrounds and click "send to Chito". I wait. I watch. I see him look around to see if there is anyone he knows around. Not seeing that its me, he accepts the files I send him. I can see that he's listening to some music by a group that I don't recognize, but I make the assumption that it's probably Hip-Hop or Rap. So I browse my Rap genre and send him one the songs in my Rap category (1 of 3). He reciprocates with sending me an old school R&B song. Nice. I already have it, but that was cool.
This exchange goes on for about an hour and it occurs to me that this is the killer feature of the Zune. This is the reason why people would buy it. Here we were; a teenager and an old guy sending each other stuff via Zune. We didn't know each other from the man in the moon. We probably won't ever see each other again, but I will remember this exchange and it cheered me up. For an hour, I forgot about death and sadness. For an hour, I shared something cool with someone. Random Acts of Kindness via Zune.
Everybody needs a Zune!
For the past few weeks, I've been listening to FM Radio on my Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. On occasion, I normally browse the Internet or watch streaming TV and videos. However, the FM radio feature has allowed me to listen to radio shows and music for better part of the day with little lose in battery power. Of course, my N800 is in offline mode with the device in idle mode (yes, FM radio still plays in offline/idle mode).
This got me thinking of the old hand radio sets or cassette/radio player we used to carry back in the 80's. How has these gadgets changed since then.
In my search, I found the the Mini Digital AM/FM Stereo Pocket Radio.

Sprint will launch the HTC Touch to the market in November. It's on a CDMA network, includes no WIFI, no GPS but may prove to be a decent Windows Mobile phone compared to the GSM HTC Touch with less RAM and processor speed that was released earlier this year.

Palm Centro
Palm has unveiled a new smartphone that's targeted to a wider cell phone market with their $99 device. The design is similiar to the Blackberry Pearl and Treo but is $200 -$300 less than the heavy hitters.
The Centro launches in mid-October with Sprint as a exclusive carrier.
Upcoming T-Mobile US Phones
I don't know why T-mobile US don't publize their upcoming phones. Atleast, advertise new phones several months in advance. For example, if found out about the Blackberry Curve several months ago (see post).
Now, it appears T-Mobile US will have the HTC Juno & HTC Kaiser in October 2007. Check out the source.
With competition from other providers, it makes perfect sense to advertise your upcoming phones T-Mobile. Case in point. The iPhone was advertised by AT&T months before it was released and was a success. Just my 2 cents...
T-Mobile USA Getting the HTC Kaiser?
Here recently (past year or so) I've been really dissappointed in T-Mobile lack of quality inventory of smartphones and lack of 3G. Overall, I've been very satisfied with the voice service. Last week I signed up for the data plan (EDGE + T-Mobile Hotspot) after they cut the price to $19.99 per month. I was almost ready to hang up my T-Mobile hat and jump to AT&T to get the AT&T Tilt (aka HTC Kaiser).
Today, I read that the FCC has documentation of the HTC Kaiser manual and other docs with T-Mobile Today screen photos and mention of myFavs and T-Mobile Hotspot in the US. And to boot it appears this device with support T-Mobile's 3G.
Hopefully, we can see this device in T-Mobile US towards the end of the year. I am so ready from my T-Mobile MDA to the HTC Kaiser.
Way to go T-Mobile!

T-Mobile's iPhone Rights
T-Mobile Germany will distribute the iPhone for €399 ($554 US) and will pay Apple a share of the iPhone sales.
Apple will give details about the iPhone availability in Europe.
I'm sure many T-Mobile USA customers would attempt to purchase the iPhone from T-Mobile Germany to use in the USA.
I'm sure there's some language select feature to change from German to English.

T-Mobile cuts data plan price to $19.99.
Cool! T-mobile USA lowered the T-Mobile Internet & Hotspot plan from $29.99 to $19.99. In fact, it looks like the entire T-Mobile data plan has been revamped.
I've always held back on subscribing to T-Mobile's Edge because I could get 3G for the same price and I'm rarely near by a T-Mobile Hotspot to make it worth $29.99. I even tried getting just the data plan only for $19.99 but was told that it was impossible to separate the data plan from the HotSpot.
The Apple iPod touch Review
PC Magazine (PCMAG) recently reviewed the iPod touch and its no surprise they gave it rave reviews.
We all know about the wonderful features of the iPod touch. Multi-touch display, CoverFlo, browser, WIFI and etc. Yet, I think its interesting to list the cons as noted in the PCMAG review.
Cons:
- Can't purchase video via Wifi.
- Earbuds suck.
- Can't turn off Starbucks feature
There's no doubt regardless of the cons this iPod touch overshadow the iPhone. I only wish they added bluetooth 2.0, Skype, Google Talk, front video camera for video conferencing, and RSS reader. What a shame. It's such a sexy and enticing device.
Switch-a-roo on Amazon.com
A few days ago, I noted that Amazon was selling the HTC Touch. They even had a picture of the official HTC Touch. Now, it is being sold as the HTC Touch P3450, totally different products I must add. Similiar specs yes but the P3450 does not have Touch-Flo technology like the HTC Touch.
Don't get it twisted. This is the HTC P4350 (see specs on HTC's website)

What happened to the T-Mobile I used to love?
I've been with T-Mobile USA going on 7 years now and I am beginning to feel like it's time to move on. For one, they continue to lag behind the power curve when it comes to providing quality solid smartphones. I remember when I joined T-Mobile (what was then Powertel/Voice Stream) how they were one of the first providers in the U.S to have the Windows Mobile smartphone.
Yet, these past few years I've seen little or no progress in good inventory and service. What happened to the T-Mobile I used to love. The lack of 3G and poor supply of smartphones has really got me looking to drop my service with T-mobile when my contract ends in 6 mos.
Now I read today on Engadget about rumors that T-Mobile USA will be getting the HTC Juno soon.
What the heck is wrong with T-Mobile. At best they could have at least brought in the HTC Touch with Windows Mobile Pro. The HTC Juno is Window Mobile Standard.
Amazon.com has the HTC Touch
Amazon.com is now selling the unlocked version HTC Touch for $539.99.
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Touch-Cellular-Phone-Unlocked/dp/B000SC1U18/gadgetchain-20
Given the recent $200 price cut for the iPhone, I envision a price reduction (say $100) for the HTC Touch unlocked in order to compete. I personally had an opportunity to play with this device for a week and I think its a nice alternative to the iPhone. Here's why!
It's a Windows Mobile 6 Pro device which means its completely customizable. There's tons of apps available for this platform. For instance, you can purchase a full screen keyboard app, not to mention tons of games, and office productivity software. Plus, it comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook.
Although it doesn't have an internal 8gig flash drive, it does use a micro SD card which you can get a 4gig micro SD card nowadays.
If your looking to use this device for business, I would highly recommend looking for something more powerful. The 201MHZ processor gets kinda of sluggish when you sync tons of contacts, emails, & calendar appts with your exchange server. The Sprint version of the HTC Touch gets an upgrade to 400MHZ if you like Sprint. So this is clearly a consumer device.
Overall, the device is very slim and sexy. It feels great in your hands and is a good smartphone to have if you're not a huge text messenger. However, you can purchase a minature bluetooth keyboard if that's the case.
iPod Touch vs Nokia N800 Tablet
Every since Steve Jobs announced the new Apple iPod touch, I've been seriously considering purchasing the iPod touch but what would I do with my Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. So I began weighing the pros and cons of each. Hopefully, this will help me decide if I rather get an iPod touch and get rid of my Nokia n800.
Here's short list of my pros & cons:
Cons
| iPod Touch | Nokia n800 Internet Tablet |
| No bluetooth | No Multi-touch interface |
| No email or IM app | Doesn't sync calendar & contacts with PC |
| Stuck with iTunes | Can't switch from landscape to portait |
| Can't install apps | No Cool factor |
| Can only stream YouTube videos |
Pros
| iPod Touch | Nokia n800 Internet Tablet |
| Multi-touch interface | Includes FM Radio, GPS, IM, & Skype |
| Switch from landscape to portrait | Can stream live TV, movies, & YoutTube |
| Cover-Flo | Has bluetooth and connects to other bluetooth devices |
| Slimmer and better design than n800 | Fully customizable & uses 2 SD cards for flash memory storage (up to 8 gigs). |
| Is sexy as Hell! | Has a full on screen keyboard & camera for video conferencing |
I had my Nokia n800 for nearly 2 months and I must say this device meets all my needs. It fits in my pockets and I can browse the web, chat via Instant Message, Skype, or watch live TV as long as I have a Internet connection. Not to mention, GPS to boot. However, I just can't get over the coolness of the iPod touch. It's hella sexy with the multi-touch and cover-Flo. I would like to use both devices and see which one I like best but for now I'm sticking with my Nokia n800.
Does Apple's iPod touch have Bluetooth?
Yeah, you've seen it before, that's the iPod touch. But take a closer look at the upper-right corner of the display. See that little icon? Right, Bluetooth, as in the not announced Bluetooth radio in Apple's new iPod touch. Is this just a snafu from Apple's arts-and-charts team or something more say, AVRCP and stereo A2DP related? At this point, Apple's not saying and we don't know. But you'd better hurry up and click that Read link because that Apple-harvested picture won't be around for much longer.

Apple cuts iPhone Price
Apple dropped the iPhone price by $200 on Wednesday; making the 8gig iPhone available for $399. The 4 gigabyte iPhone will eventually be phased out.
With the drop in price, I can only envision sales growing as we approach the holiday season. Heck, I'm even considering the iPhone now after the price drop. Of course, this all depends on the price of the AT&T Tilt when it become available.

The Nokia N800 is a great portable TV
I purchased my Nokia N800 Internet Tablet about a month ago to browse the Web whereever I go. It's true I accomplish this on my T-Mobile MDA to some degree. The problem is that Pocket IE doesn't support Java based websites so that eliminates one of the most important sites I visit very often- My virtual classroom at Capella University.
I'm not here to blog about that feature. The coolest feature on the Nokia N800 is the ability to watch live TV, and streaming videos. Thanks to a FREE service called Orb. So what's Orb. In a nutshell Orb turns your home PC into your own personal broadcasting streaming service. If you have a PC with a TV tuner and/or tons of video, you can stream that data to your Nokia N800 anywhere anyplace you have a Internet connection.
The Nokia N800 can also serve as a VCR player by easily scheduling which shows I would like to record from the program schedule.
WOW! Well worth the price. GPS unit + Internet Tablet + Portable TV = Nokia N800.
AT&T Tilt (aka HTC Kaiser, Smartphone Review
I thought I share this review of the AT&T Tilt which will be available in the U.S. thru AT&T in the next couple of months (crossing fingers:).
Here's a snapshot of the features:

Comes with 3 megapixel camera, frontal camera for video conferencing, and GPS receiver.

A nice buit-in keyboard and adjustable screen to make it situp like a mini-PC.
Here's a closer look at the slide out keyboard.
The Next Huge Gadget - The Microsoft Surface
Multi-touch devices is where the future of computing is going. First the Apple iphone, and now the Microsoft coffee tabletop computer being referred to as the Surface. The Surface provides effortless interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch, and physical objects like your bluetooth enabled cell phone or mobile device.
We should start to see Surface computing in restaurants, hotels, casinos, and retail locations towards the end of 2007 . Microsoft Surface partners such as Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, IGT,Harrah's Entertainment Inc., Starwood Hotels & Restorts Worldwide Inc, and T-Mobile USA stores will be the first companies to provide Surface computing.
Check out Microsoft Surface website for more information.
Samsung BlackJack Gets an Upgrade to Windows Mobile 6
It appears the rumors that have been circulating these past few months are finally over. According to a post by Mike Temporale at Smartphone Thoughts, a ROM release for the Blackjack will be available September 17.
Keep a look out on AT&T's website for upgrade information.
Preview of the Panasonic DMC L10 Digital Camera
The L10 is a very different beast to the camera that came before it, and is obviously aimed at a very different segment of the market. Where the L1 was a solid, heavy lump of a camera with a semi professional build, traditional 'shutter speed and aperture dial' operation and styling that owed more than a nod to Leica's rangefinder models, the L10 is a lightweight, conventionally styled SLR with a control interface and feature set that matches mid-range models from the bigger players in the market. You don't get the L1's tank-like build, and some users will bemoan the loss of the unique 'bounce' 2-position flash and aperture ring, but I think it's safe to say that the L10 is far more likely to lift Panasonic out of its niche position in the DLSR market than the L1 ever could.
The main spec differences (as we know them today) are shown below, but first let's start with a summary of the important stuff:
- New lightweight compact body.
- Resolution increase (from 7.5 to 10 megapixels).
- Slightly brighter viewfinder (with optional 1.2x magnifier eyepiece included) .
- Articulating screen (180° swing and tilt).
- New smaller, lighter kit lens (around a stop slower max aperture too).
- All-new control interface.
- Contrast detect autofocus in live view (mirror stays up) - with compatible lens
- Less expensive than L1 at launch (though recent L1 price drops may reduce gap in store).

My Next Digital Camcorder - JVC Everio GZMG555 5MP HDD
I've been searching for a replacement digital camcorder for some time now. One of the things I wanted for my next digital camcorder was a 30 gigabyte hard drive and have more than 4 megapixels. Oh yeah! It must cost less than $1,000.
Well, looks like my search is over. The JVC Everio GZMG555 5MP is small enough to store in a small camera bag, has a 30 gig harddrive, takes a SD card (God knows I have tons of them lying around), and can be used a decent digital camera for still photos.
Anyone interested in buying my old Sharp MiniDV Digital Viewcam? :=)

T-Mobile Getting the Blackberry Curve
According to a Rep at T-mobile, it appears T-Mobile will have the Blackberry curve sometime in September 2007.
I only hope they get better Windows Mobile Smartphone devices soon. Hey, T-Mobile what's sup! T-Mobile Germany has the HTC Touch why can't T-Mobile US get the Touch as well? Come on. You're hurting me here!
Types of Mobile Phones
Here's an overview of the technology now available, the production options, and how well and far the devices can travel.
Robert Strohmeyer describes how to buy a smartphone and the types of mobile phones available to us. If you're in need of a mobile device that manages your calendar, contacts, and synchronizes your business or personal data then a smartphone is what you need.
According to Strohmeyer, there's 6 types of smartphones.
- Blackberry
- Windows Mobile
- Palm
- Symbian
- iPhone
